‘Bean dad’ John Roderick slammed for demanding daughter work out how to use can opener

The internet has crowned its first villain of 2021 — a dad who used beans, a can-opener and some dubious parenting to teach his nine-year-old a life lesson and then boasted about it online.

Social media users are in uproar after the dad refused to help his hungry daughter open a can of beans, insisting instead that she work it out for herself during a six-hour ordeal that he detailed in a series of since-deleted tweets.

Musician and podcaster John Roderick — who dubbed himself “Apocalypse Dad” and has also become known as Bean Dad — refused to let his daughter eat until she worked out how to open the tin of beans without his help.

This morning he had to delete his Twitter account after his posts triggered an onslaught of hate from users accusing him of child abuse. He was also been called out over past posts that were allegedly racist and transphobic.

Roderick kicked off the #Beandad saga on January 2, tweeting: “So, yesterday my daughter (9) was hungry and I was doing a jigsaw puzzle so I said over my shoulder “make some baked beans.” She said, “How?” like all kids do when they want YOU to do it, so I said, “Open a can and put it in pot.” She brought me the can and said “Open it how?”

“So I said, “How do you think this works?” She studied it and applied it to the top of the can, sideways. She struggled for a while and with a big, dramatic sigh said, “Will you please just open the can?” Apocalypse Dad was overjoyed: a Teaching Moment just dropped in my lap!”

The debate that ensued has been trending in Twitter over the weekend.

In the 20-plus tweets that followed, Roderick described how his daughter spent six hours “on and off” trying to open the can of beans, at one point telling her dad that she hates him until eventually working it out.

Roderick told her to "study the parts, study the can, figure out what the can-opener inventor was thinking when they tried to solve this problem."

“At this point she said, “I don’t want baked beans” and marched off. Apocalypse Dad went into full ‘The Road’ Mode! “Sweetheart, neither of us will eat another bite today until we get into this can of beans.” She screamed “AUGH!” like Lucy Van Pelt. She read a book for awhile.”

Social media users, however, were not impressed, with many questioning his parenting and accusing him of emotional abuse and neglect.

For some, it triggered memories of their own abusive childhoods.

Roderick’s co-host on his podcast Omnibus!, Ken Jennings — who has been named as interim Jeopardy host after the death of Alex Trebek — initially joked that he was jealous of the attention Roderick was getting.

“Extremely jealous and annoyed that my podcast co-host is going to be a dictionary entry and I never will,” he wrote.

Later, though, he tried to hose down the hate, telling followers: “If this reassures anyone, I personally know John to be (a) a loving and attentive dad who (b) tells heightened-for-effect stories about his own irascibility on like ten podcasts a week. This site is so dumb.”
