- A six-week old baby has died and its twin sibling in a critical condition in hospital
- Paramedics were called to the home at Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane, about 5.40am
- The mother reportedly had the twins in bed and woke to find them unconscious
A six-week-old baby has died and its twin is in a critical condition after they fell asleep in bed with their mother.
Paramedics were called to the home on Sunray Street in Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane, at 5.40am on Wednesday, where they found one baby dead and the other in a critical condition.
The newborn babies are believed to be twins.
The surviving sibling was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
Neighbours told The Courier Mail they were woken at 4.30am by the sound of the twins' father 'howling' and immediately feared someone had died.
'He was howling and screaming,' the neighbour said.
'I thought someone was dead and it really scared me... he was so upset.'
Another neighbour told The Australian she thought the mother had been hurt.
'I was very scared afterwards, I thought something must have happened to the wife,' she said.
'This morning, it must have been the parents (of the couple), came and were crying in the yard,' the neighbour said.
'The little girl was happy, playing in the yard.'
It is understood the babies' mother woke in the early hours of this morning to find blankets and bedding covering them.
Paramedics were called to the home and pronounced one child dead, before rushing the second baby to hospital in a critical condition.
Neighbours said the young family had lived in the home for about two years and kept to themselves, but were always 'doting on' their children.
Two other children, a four-year-old girl and a boy about two are believed to live at the home as well.
An officer at the scene described the ordeal as 'a tragic accident'.
A Queensland Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia: 'A baby has died and another has been transported to hospital in a critical condition.'
A crime scene has been established and investigators are now at the house.
Forensic teams are working inside the bedroom and have been spotted walking in and out of the home holding bags.
The parents are at the hospital with their surviving child and are believed to be cooperating with police.
